Oma's Trip ~ 03/03/03 Dateline: Las Cruces, NM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A VERY good day -- all things considered. Bit of a late start waiting on Robert (the mechanic in Ft. Stockton) to call me with car news. Robert is a little Hispanic man with salt & pepper hair and he seemed to know what he was doing. What he said (I think) was that there were some wires that connect to the fuel pump and they somehow got loose. So, I guess about all he did was diagnose the problem and fix it. Charge was only $55.00 and since Guidion (the tow truck driver) didn't charge me for the tow back to Ft. Stockton, that turned out to be not nearly as expensive as I feared. I asked Robert if the car would get me all the way to Washington state and he said "Oh, sure! A Subaru runs forever!". I felt MUCH BETTER after I heard that. Remember... no cab available in Ft. Stockton, so Robert came to the Motel 6 in his own truck to get me when the car was ready. It was 10:30 before I left. I also decided that this car needs a name... maybe she's been feeling slighted without a name... so she is now "Soonie Subaru". Once I got into "Big Bend Country", the surrounding mountains made it kinda pretty and I stopped at a rest stop to take a picture of the mountains Crossed into Hudspeth County, TX and Mountain Time Zone at 12:42pm CST/11:42am MST and I didn't have to gas up til 1:05pm MST at Texas Red's in Fabens. From there, the guy said it was only 75 miles to Las Cruces, NM, so I decided to go for it!! Sure felt good to see that "WELCOME TO NEW MEXICO" sign. Will check mileages when I get online to post this. Revised (tentative) itinerary Sierra Vista, AZ Phoenix, AZ Los Angeles (Northridge, CA) Vacaville, CA Reno, NV Grants Pass, OR Portland, OR Seattle, WA Home Stay tuned....
