8/27/05 - Evacuation Day

The morning was spent putting stuff inside the house that could blow away. Afternoon was spent helping my
son-in-law board up their house and mine. We "caravaned" (2 vehicles makes a caravan, right?) to Julie's
house. Left Stacey's car there. Chris drove his truck with his mother, grandmother, and Maddie in her car
seat. Stacey drove Chris' mother's car with me, Stacey's grandmother, and Abby in her car seat. They had put
"contraflow" into effect before we left and that worked VERY WELL. We got ourselves into the correct lane
so that we zipped right on out of there and on to Baton Rouge. Took us abut 2.5 hours -- you may remember
that LAST year when we evacuated for Hurricane Ivan, it took us 7 hours to get here. Chris' dad joined us as
we approached Julie's house, having driven down from his hunting camp in Mississippi. They wouldn't let him
go to New Orleans because "contraflow" was already in effect. That's the reason I helped Chris board up our
houses... his Dad couldn't get here from Mississippi.
